Toward an intuitive sign language animation authoring system for the deaf

Abstract

This paper presents an ongoing effort to-wards an online collaborative framework allowing Deafindividuals to author intelligible signs using a dedicated3D animation authoring interface. The results whichare presented mainly focus on the design of a dedicatedUser Interface assisted by novel input devices. This de-sign can not only benefit the Deaf but also the linguistsstudying Sign Language by providing them with a novelkind of study material. This material would consist ofa symbolic representation of intelligible sign languageanimations together with a fine-grained log of the user’sedit actions. Two user studies, demonstrate how Leap-Motion and Kinect-like devices can be used togetherfor recording and authoring hand trajectories as well asfacial animation.
