Ethical Behaviour Aspects of Autonomous Intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems

Résumé

Industry 4.0 fosters the development of more autonomousand intelligent cyber-physical systems that interact with humans in openenvironments. While the technical aspects are heavily researched, thesame does not hold for the accompanying ethical issues that are relevantfor the design, development, operation, and maintenance of such sys-tems. In engineering teams and industrialists at large, ethical behavioraspects of autonomous intelligent cyber-physical systems are often seenas an add-on and are rarely appropriately considered during system en-gineering. The aim of this work is firstly to understand the reluctance ofresearchers and industrialists and secondly, to justify the need to addressethical considerations in all lifecycle phases of autonomous intelligentcyber-physical systems. A case study in train transportation exemplifiessome of the issues discussed, and clearly shows that the development ofautonomous intelligent cyber-physical systems without addressing theirethical behavior is incomplete
