Marvel comic books’ French reception based on « letters to the editor » in Lug publications.

La réception des comics Marvel en France à partir du courrier des lecteurs dans les revues des éditions Lug.

Résumé

In this paper based on a current research project, we would like to study the readers’ reaction to the translation and the publishing of Marvel comic books by éditions Lug in France between 1969 and 1989. The specific editorial requirements for the publications made for a young readership, particularly the scrutiny of the Commission de surveillance des publications destinées à l’enfance et à l’adolescence (Surveillance committee for publications intended to children and teenagers), have a strong influence on the choices made by the publishers. The perceived young age of the readers is added to the demands of the committee to steer the editors in the choice of a cultural translation, adjusted linguistically and visually to un-americanize Marvel comic books. From this cultural context, we will study a large corpus of readers’ letters published by the editor, a corpus which provides a written trace of the reception. Those reactions are constant during the two decades of Lug publishing of the Marvel comic books, they are sometimes written by the same reader, and they can even form a conversation of sort between readers with the publisher becoming the middleman. Another distinctive aspect, every letter received an answer by the editors, published or not, as long as the reader provided a stamp. Those answers were specific the what was asked by the reader and usually written by one of the translators working full-time for the publishing house. Finally, we will take into consideration the effort made by the reader to react, particularly in a time when the only way for that was to send a letter at the nearby post office. The cost (in money and in time) is significant of the dedication of the readers. Those reactions are a way to measure the gap between the adaptation process followed by Lug and the perception developed by the readers.
