Energy absorption capability of spruce and beech under axial compression with rigid confinement

Résumé

The uni-axial strain responses of two wood species (Spruce and Beech) have been determined at two strain rates of 0.0015s-1 and 600s-1 under compression in the longitudinal direction. The high strain rate compressions are performed using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar device made of Pa.6-6. A multiaxial stress state can be induced by using a rigid confinement device. In this configuration, densification regime can be reached for both strain rates and wood species. Dynamic stress-strain curves, when compared to quasi-static ones, exhibit an increase of compressive strength (166% for spruce and 106% for beech), plateau stress values (22.5% for both species) and also of specific energies (around 18% for spruce and around 14% for beech) with an increasing strain rate and both species present good energy absorption capability (until 75kJ/kg for spruce and 49kJ/kg for beech).
