Zirconia ceramics, structure and properties

Résumé

This article gives an introductory review on zirconia by describing its crystallographic, physical and chemical properties. Developed since the 1980s following the discovery of stabilization at room temperature of its high temperature phases, zirconia has continued to fascinate scientists and technologists by its particular properties of its solid solutions leading to occurrence of mechanical toughening behavior and special ionic conduction processes. This article is an updated presentation of the previous review by R. Stevens published in 1986 taking into account the knowledge advances in zirconia and its application fields.
